David Quinn is an independent artist who emerged in 2019 with his brilliant debut album “Wanderin’ Fool“. Prolific, with almost one album released each year since then, the Midwestern artist built his own musical style over the years, putting together classic country, outlaw country, heartland rock, folk and americana.
His sixth studio album, “Down & Dirty“, produced by Jordan Lehning and recorded at the Duck, in Nashville, reflects the evolution of his music, while mantaining very high the quality of his songwriting.
Compared to his previous albums, you immediately notice a musical change. You still have this country and roots rock sound, but funky and bluesy vibes now prevail. This groovy sound has certainly something to do with the presence of the drummer Miles Miller and the bassist Kevin Black, who worked with Sturgill Simpson, particularly for Johnny Blue Skies’ last album, “Mutiny after Midnight“. David Quinn said that he wanted this album to have a deep funky groove, and that’s exactly what he achieved.
You’ll particularly enjoy this funky sound while listening to “Payin’ Dues“, “Fever Dream“, the wonderful “Freightline“, or the last single released, the excellent “Gravy Train“. The rhythm section is particularly groovy, with David Quinn’s voice perfectly enhanced by this brilliant instrumentation.
One of the best songs of the album is probably “Long Time Gone“, released as a single this summer. This amazing tune is full of funky, bluesy and rock and roll vibes, with wonderful guitar. “Cold Turkey“, and the rock and roll title track, are also excellent songs.
With “Down & Dirty“, David Quinn gives us the evidence of the extent of his talent and proves that he has more than one string to his bow. Seven years after a debut album based on traditional country, his capacity to reinvent himself and to improve the quality of his music is particularly outstanding.
