Album review – Logan Mac’s “Til The Ground”

We had a lot of excellent debut albums this year, with Kashus Culpepper’s “Act I“, the Kruse Brothers’ “Heartbreak and Honky Tonk“, Clay Stray Unit’s “Sin and Squalor” or Preston McCabe’s “Heading West“.

For red dirt music, specifically, we had two wonderful debut albums, both released in April by Oklahoman artists, Krislyn Arturs’ “Honky Tonk PhD“, reviewed here, and Logan Mac’s “Til The Ground“.

If both debut albums certainly belong to the red dirt genre, the comparison stops there, because Logan Mac’s story is quite unique and particularly remarkable. We’re talking about an artist who completely stepped away from music 15 years ago to pursue a blue-collar work in the oil industry and to center his life around his wife and three daughters. He got back into music after losing his father in 2022, as his Dad encouraged him to pursue again his musical career before passing away.

After releasing a heartfelt song, “Dance Under Stars“, in 2024, that went viral, the Oklahoman artist released his debut album, “Til The Ground“, on April 10th. Produced by David Beck at Studio Martindale, Texas, it’s an album wonderfully written, full of authentic and relatable songs about real life in small towns of Oklahoma.

The album starts with the title track, and listening to it, you have immediatly an idea of what you’ll find on this record: masterful songwriting, excellent music with wonderful harmonica and fiddle, and the impressive voice of Logan Mac.

Oh Tiffany” is a real gem. With stellar songwriting and Turnpike Troubadours’ vibes, it’s one of the most beautiful songs of the record.

“Oh Tiffany, will you pray for me

Cover me with love

Cause these demons got ahold of me and they ain’t givin’ up

I need refuge for my hurt

In the light of your grace

Where scars find redemption

Will you be my shelter place”

Oh Tiffany

Dammit Debbie“, with excellent harmonica and fiddle, and wonderful storytelling, is also a song with strongTurnpike vibes.

Turquoise Angel” is another gem, masterfully written: “She reminds me of a rainbow, coming through the sun’s glow, showing up, after these storms” is such a beautiful verse !

Steel Toe Boots” and “Euphoric“, both with great pedal steel, “Deer Stand“, with stellar songwriting and “Baptist Parking Lot“, are another gems.

Logan Mac is an artist who writes with honesty and authenticity about struggle, hope, love and redemption. His songs are relatable and he sings them with a lot of emotion and a unique voice. With such a tremendous debut album, we can’t wait for his next opus !
