Album review – Kathryn Legendre’s “Here’s your Honky Tonk”

Five years after her wonderful EP “Making It Up” (you can read my review here), native Texan artist Kathryn Legendre released her new LP, “Here’s your Honky Tonk“, on June 27th.

This album, recorded at Signal Hill Studio in Austin, Tx, was produced by Kathryn Legendre, Brian Broussard, drummer Patrick Herzfeld and bassist Will Walden. All songs were written by Kathryn Legendre, except the last one of the album, “The Long Haul“, that was written by Brian Broussard.

If you love traditional country and Texas music, you’ll surely fall in love with this record: it’s a full honky tonk style album, including a lot of wonderful pedal steel and fiddle, thanks to Katie Shore and Geoff Queen.

Among its nine amazing songs, “Best Western Breakdown” is one of the most beautiful. Excellently written, very catchy, with splendid pedal steel and keyboards, it’s a true country gem.

Cigarettes” is another fantastic song, wonderfully written and with beautiful pedal steel. The quality of the music and the beautiful voice of Kathryn Legendre make this track particularly outstanding.

Tear Your World Apart” is a wonderful honky tonk song, particularly catchy, as is the awesome “Tailing Eighteen Wheelers“, with its fantastic pedal steel, and the amazing title track. If you love the combination of fiddle and pedal steel, you have to listen to another gem of this LP, “Back to The Barroom Again“.

The album also includes a great collaboration with Ray Benson, for the song “The Day I Smoked a J With Ray“. The result is particularly brilliant.

With such a quality album, there’s one thing that we ask to Kathryn Legendre: please, don’t let us such a long time without your music. For all those who love honky tonk and traditional country music, this album is a real gem.
