Song review – Julia Hatfield’s “Opinions”

Julia Hatfield is a young and brilliant artist from Texas. Singer, songwriter, pianist, she was awarded as 2018 new female vocalist of the year by Texas Regional Radio Awards. With a strong taste for old-school music, inspired by artists like Dolly Parton and Guy Clark, she made beautiful covers of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back down” and of Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes“. You can appreciate her talent and her wonderful voice watching her music videos below.

After an early album, “Hopeless Romantic“, some excellent singles, among them the amazing “Who I Wanted You To Be“, that gave me the opportunity to discover her music some years ago, and a brilliant EP, “Halfway Here“, she just released a great song, named “Opinions“. It’s undoubtedly the kind of song that we need to listen in our polarized and uncertain world. With some nostalgy, Julia Hatfield tells us about a time of wisdom and unity, once embodied by America’s “greatest generation“. Her grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Hatfileld, who appears on the single’s cover, was one of those Americans who stood for their country.

I love my neighbor you told me to hate

They think we have problems, but our problem’s the same

The flag stays at half mast, it no longer soars

We’ve completely lost sight what we’re figting for

The greatest generation has almost died out

Man, could we use their opinions right now

Opinions

Julia Hatfield sings passionately about this generation that lived at a time of war and economic depression, reminding us that their confidence, their faith in their country and their fight for a better future, despite the difficulties, is a strong message for our divided and sometimes pessimistic world, too often ruled by fear and hatred. The song, excellently written, has a very powerful message, and it couldn’t be a better time to listen to it.
