EP review – Austin Gilliam’s “I’m Sorry, I’m Fine”

Austin Gilliam is an artist from South Texas who grew up in Corpus Christi and started on the Texas music scene as a sideman, for artists such as Brandon Jenkins, Drew Kennedy and Matt King, before moving on to frontman of his own band and songwriter. His flagship single, “Strawberry Lemonade“, released 10 years ago, is a great rock song, that I recommend you to listen to. On May 26th, he released a new EP, “I’m Sorry, I’m Fine“.

The first word that comes to my mind when listening to this record is : eclectic. Indeed, its five songs, quite disparate, reflects the diversity of Austin Gilliam’s influences and his capacity to write and play a wide range of songs belonging to different genres.

Let me be clear: despite its variety, the record has its perfectly distinctive style and its coherence. All the songs are excellently written and it’s quality music from the first song till the last one. In my opinion, the fact that the EP doesn’t belong to a main genre is not a weakness but an evidence of maturity. It’s also very enjoyable for the listeners. That’s said, let’s go to more details!

The single “A Little Dirt“, released ahead of the EP, on May 11th, is a very good song, melodious, with country and rock vibes.

I’m Fine” is a wonderful song, particularly catchy, with amazing guitars and beautiful piano.

If you love good and angry rock, you’ll undoubtedly love the excellent “Never Gonna Die” and its wonderful riff.

Runnin“, excellently written, is a catchy and lively song.

I’m Sorry” is probably the best song of this record. It’s beautifully written, perfectly sung, and particularly powerful. It’s the kind of song that you’ll appreciate more and more after several listens.

If you love quality music, catchy songs, big guitars and great songwriting, “I’m Sorry, I’m Fine” is made for you, and Austin Gilliam is a name that you should definitely keep in mind.
